Your Top 10 Questions About Shock Absorbers, Answered

Introduction

We get a lot of questions about shock absorbers — from customers, workshop partners, and social media followers. Here are the 10 most common ones, answered clearly and honestly.

Q1: How do I know if my shock absorber is bad?

Look for: excessive bouncing after bumps, nose-diving when braking, body roll in corners, uneven tyre wear, oil leaks on the absorber body, and vibration through the steering wheel.

Q2: How often should I replace shock absorbers?

As a general guideline, inspect every 20,000 km and expect to replace them every 50,000 to 80,000 km. In Malaysia’s road conditions, this may be closer to 40,000 to 60,000 km for city drivers.

Q3: Can I replace just one shock absorber?

We strongly advise against it. Always replace in pairs on the same axle (both fronts or both rears) for balanced handling.

Q4: What’s the difference between KYB Excel-G and RS Ultra?

  • Excel-G restores OE (factory) ride quality. RS Ultra goes a step further with improved handling and body control while still being suitable for daily use.

Q5: Are KYB absorbers better than OEM absorbers?

KYB is an OEM supplier to major car manufacturers, so in many cases the KYB aftermarket absorber IS the OEM absorber — just sold through a different channel.

Q6: What is a shock absorber mounting?

The mounting (also called top mount or strut mount) connects the absorber to the car’s body. It includes rubber bushings that absorb vibration. It should be inspected and often replaced together with the absorber.

Q7: Do I need to replace the dust cover too?

If the existing dust cover is cracked, torn, or damaged, yes — replace it when you replace the absorber. The dust cover protects the absorber shaft from dirt and water, extending its service life.

Q8: What’s the difference between a shock absorber and a strut?

A strut (or MacPherson strut) is a combined suspension unit that includes an absorber inside a structural housing. Many modern cars use struts at the front. A traditional shock absorber is a separate component. Both perform damping but are structurally different.

Q9: Is SenSen as good as KYB?

They serve different purposes. SenSen is a reliable budget option for everyday city driving on older vehicles. KYB offers higher performance, longer service life, and is available in performance-oriented variants. Both have their place.

Q10: Where can I buy genuine KYB absorbers in Johor / Selangor?
