What Is a Driveshaft and How Do You Know When It’s Failing?

Introduction

The driveshaft is what gets the engine’s power from the gearbox to the wheels. Without it, your engine runs but the car doesn’t move. Despite its critical role, many drivers are unfamiliar with what a driveshaft is or how to recognise when it’s failing.

Here’s a clear explanation — and the warning signs every Malaysian driver should know.

What Is a Driveshaft?

In a front-wheel-drive car (which covers most Perodua, Proton, Honda, and Toyota models in Malaysia), the driveshaft connects the transmission to each front wheel. It transmits the rotational force (torque) needed to drive the wheels.

The driveshaft must handle two challenges simultaneously: transmitting power while the wheel moves up and down with the suspension, and while the wheel turns left and right for steering. This is why CV (Constant Velocity) joints are incorporated at each end of the driveshaft.

Warning Signs of a Failing Driveshaft

Clicking when turning at low speed: This is the most classic and distinctive sign. A clicking sound (especially audible during slow-speed U-turns or parking manoeuvres) usually points to a worn outer CV joint. The click is caused by the ball bearings inside the joint grinding against each other due to lost lubrication.

Vibration during acceleration: A vibration felt through the floor or seat when accelerating, which smooths out at steady speed, can indicate a worn inner CV joint or an imbalanced driveshaft.

Shuddering when pulling away from a stop: If the car shudders or jerks as you first apply power from standstill, the inner CV joint may be worn.

Grease on the inside of the wheel or tyre: A split CV boot allows grease to escape and gets flung onto nearby surfaces. If you see black grease on the inside of your tyre, check the CV boot immediately.

The CV Boot: First Line of Defence

The CV boot is the rubber accordion-shaped cover that seals the CV joint and keeps grease in while keeping contaminants out. When a CV boot cracks or tears, the grease escapes and dirt enters — causing rapid CV joint wear.

Replacing a cracked CV boot early (before the joint is contaminated) is significantly cheaper than replacing the entire CV joint or driveshaft. Regular inspection of the boots during service visits can catch this early.
